Fun Fact: Hornwort is one of the most widely distributed aquatic plants in the world and has been found on every continent except Antarctica. It grows rapidly, making it excellent for absorbing excess nutrients and helping control algae.
Appearance: Hornwort has long, branching stems covered in fine, feathery green leaves that resemble soft pine needles. It lacks true roots but develops modified leaves that can anchor it into substrate if desired.
Habitat: Naturally found in lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers, Hornwort floats beneath the surface or forms dense mats in freshwater environments.
Aquarium Use: Hornwort is commonly used as a background plant or a floating cover for fry and shy fish. Its dense structure offers excellent hiding places and can provide shade to help reduce algae growth.
Care: Extremely hardy and adaptable. It grows quickly in a wide range of water conditions and lighting levels. No substrate is required, and it can thrive even in low-tech aquariums.
Propagation: Easily propagated by cutting a section of the stem and allowing it to grow independently.
Note: Due to its fast growth, regular trimming may be needed. It can also release allelopathic chemicals that inhibit algae and sometimes the growth of nearby plants, so itβs best used with compatible species.
