The Purple Waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternata), although popular in aquariums, is not truly aquatic and may not thrive long-term when fully submerged. However, it can be used as a semi-aquatic plant in paludariums or in setups where part of the plant is above water. Here’s how to care for it:

1. Light Requirements:

• Medium to Bright Light: This plant prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight may scorch the leaves, while low light conditions can lead to poor growth and fading colors.

2. Water Quality:

• Moisture: Keep the plant's roots moist, but avoid over-saturating the soil if grown emersed (partially above water). For full submersion in an aquarium, monitor it closely, as prolonged submersion can lead to leaf decay.
• Temperature: Ideally, maintain water temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C).
• pH Level: A pH range of 6.5-7.5 is suitable for its growth.

3. Substrate:

• Rich, well-draining substrate is best if grown above water or as an emersed plant. When used in aquariums, ensure the roots are anchored well to prevent them from floating.

4. Nutrients:

• Fertilization: Supplement with liquid fertilizers or root tabs to encourage lush growth and maintain its vibrant purple hue.
• CO2: While not required, additional CO2 can promote healthier and more robust growth if partially submerged.

5. Pruning and Maintenance:

• Regular Trimming: Trim the plant periodically to remove decaying leaves and encourage bushier growth.
• Leaf Maintenance: Watch for yellowing or rotting leaves, especially if kept submerged for an extended period. Remove any unhealthy parts to prevent water quality issues.

6. Humidity:

• If grown emersed, ensure a high humidity environment to mimic its natural tropical habitat. This can be achieved with a glass lid or misting the leaves regularly.

Note: The Purple Waffle is more commonly used as a decorative houseplant rather than a fully aquatic one due to its sensitivity when submerged for too long. For aquariums, consider using it temporarily or in paludariums for optimal conditions.
