About the Clown Knifefish
Name: Clown Knifefish (Chitala ornata)
Max Size: Up to 40 inches in the wild, typically 20-30 inches in captivity
Water Parameters: pH 6.5-7.5, temperature 75-82°F, hardness 5-15 dGH
Diet: Carnivorous – primarily eats live and frozen foods such as shrimp, fish, worms, and insects. Can be trained to accept high-quality carnivore pellets over time.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive and predatory, especially toward smaller fish. Generally not aggressive toward similarly sized or larger tank mates.
Tank Setup: Requires a very large tank with open swimming space and hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and dense plants. Prefers dim lighting and a soft substrate. Strong filtration is necessary due to its high waste production.
Compatibility: Best kept with other large, robust fish such as arowanas, large catfish, and bichirs. Avoid small or slow-moving fish that can be seen as prey.
Behavior: Nocturnal and shy when young, but becomes more active and confident as it grows. Moves gracefully using its long anal fin, giving it a distinctive swimming pattern.
Fun Fact: The Clown Knifefish can swim both forward and backward with ease, using its elongated anal fin to maneuver effortlessly through the water.
