About the Anubias Congensis

The Anubias Congensis (Anubias barteri var. congensis) is a popular and hardy aquarium plant known for its elongated, dark green leaves. It’s perfect for beginners and experienced aquarists alike due to its adaptability and low maintenance. Here’s how to care for it:

1. Light Requirements:

  • Low to Moderate Light: Anubias Congensis can thrive in low to moderate lighting. Too much light can promote algae growth on its leaves, so moderate levels are best for optimal health.

2. Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: This plant does well in a temperature range of 72-82°F (22-28°C).
  • pH Level: It prefers a pH range of 6.0-7.5, making it suitable for most freshwater tanks.
  • Hardness: It can adapt to soft or moderately hard water, enhancing its versatility in different setups.

3. Substrate and Placement:

  • Attachment to Hard Surfaces: Anubias Congensis should not be buried in the substrate, as burying its rhizome can cause it to rot. Instead, attach it to driftwood, rocks, or decorations using fishing line or aquarium-safe glue.
  • Positioning: This plant is often used as a midground or background feature in aquascapes due to its larger leaf structure.

4. Nutrients and CO2:

  • Fertilization: Although not a heavy feeder, occasional liquid fertilization can promote healthy growth. It absorbs most nutrients directly from the water column.
  • CO2: Not required, but supplementary CO2 can enhance growth and leaf size if desired.

5. Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Trimming: Trim older, yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking fresh and encourage new growth.
  • Algae Control: This plant’s slow growth can sometimes attract algae. To prevent algae buildup, maintain a balanced light schedule and consider adding algae-eating tank mates.

6. Propagation:

  • Rhizome Division: Propagation is simple through rhizome division. Cut a section of the rhizome with several leaves attached and reattach it to a new surface to grow another plant.

7. Special Considerations:

  • Compatibility: Anubias Congensis is generally ignored by herbivorous fish, making it a safe choice for tanks with fish that might nibble on softer plants.
  • Durability: It’s a highly durable plant that can thrive in a variety of tank conditions, making it an excellent choice for beginners and low-tech setups.

By providing low to moderate lighting, proper placement, and occasional maintenance, Anubias Congensis can be a long-lasting and visually appealing addition to your aquarium.

Perhaps the best store on island to get freshwater fish. They have a huge variety, including higher end freshwater fish (discus, puffers, flowerhorns , oddballs, ect) I’ve stocked a few tanks with their fish. They quarantine well and keep it real on how their fish are doing in shop.

Had a great experience here. I was looking for a unicorn/alicorn betta and spoke with the owner, Josh, about it. I ended up using his fish importing services to import a fish from Jakarta, and he brought in a few more white opaque or unicorn type half moon bettas too, to add to the variety in store. I got a sneak peak of the store while it was shut down for one week for a proper quarantine of its new fish. The owner knows his fish and keeps them healthy. A very different experience from a Petco or PetSmart! A Petco employee even recommended I go here for more unique betta fish. Note that they carry other types of fish too, plus Aquatic plants and some aquarium equipment. Pictured are some of the giant bettas, the alicorn betta, and i believe a beautiful ram.

Wonderful shop with lots of variety. Has the most unique selection of fish on the island, and at a reasonable price! Staff is friendly and very helpful when we have questions or concerns. Love coming here and seeing the jokes around the store. Also, Vinnie!

The owner, Josh, is not just knowledgeable about the fish, but also plants and tank issues. I am new to fish tanks and he has been extremely helpful in answering my questions and offering suggestions to make my experience easier. Parking is a bit tricky, but certainly worth it.

They have rare plants you can't find at most places. Got lucky we got a few; my husband is happy. This is one of his favorite places. They get pretty busy, so be patient. The staff are very helpful.
