Glossostigma (Glossostigma elatinoides) is a popular carpeting plant in aquascaping, known for its small, bright green leaves and fast-spreading growth. It is often used to create lush, low-growing carpets in high-tech planted tanks.

1. Light requirements: Requires high-intensity lighting to maintain its compact, creeping growth. Insufficient light can cause it to grow vertically instead of spreading across the substrate.

2. Water parameters:

   • Temperature: Prefers a range of 70 to 82°F (21 to 28°C).
   • pH level: Best suited for slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5.
   • Hardness: Grows well in soft to moderately hard water.

3. Substrate and placement: A nutrient-rich substrate is essential for proper growth, as this plant is a heavy root feeder. Fine-grain substrate, such as aqua soil, helps anchor the delicate roots and supports better carpet formation.

4. Nutrients and CO2:

   • Fertilization: Requires consistent fertilization, particularly with nitrogen and iron, to maintain its vibrant green color and rapid growth.
   • CO2 supplementation: Strongly recommended for compact, healthy growth and faster spreading. Without CO2, it may become sparse and prone to algae issues.

5. Pruning and maintenance: Regular trimming is necessary to prevent the lower layers from being shaded and dying off. Frequent trimming also encourages horizontal spreading and helps maintain an even carpet.

6. Propagation: Glossostigma propagates through runners. As it spreads, new shoots emerge from the main plant, creating a dense carpet. When replanting, plant small clusters separately to encourage even spreading.

7. Special considerations: This plant is highly sensitive to algae, especially in the early stages of growth. Maintaining good water circulation, stable CO2 levels, and a proper nutrient balance can prevent algae issues.
