About the Gold Tetra

Name: Gold Tetra

Max Size: Up to 1.5 inches (3.8 cm)

Recommend pH: 6.0-7.5

Recommended Temperature (Β°F): 72-82Β°F (22-28Β°C)

Diet: Gold Tetras are omnivorous and have a versatile diet. They will readily accept a variety of foods, including high-quality flakes, small pellets, freeze-dried or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. It's recommended to provide them with a balanced diet that includes both protein-rich and vegetable matter-based foods. Supplementing their diet with occasional live or frozen foods will help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Temperament: Peaceful

Schooling or Non-Schooling Fish: Schooling Fish (Gold Tetras are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six individuals to create a natural social structure and minimize stress.)

Possible types of tank mates: Gold Tetras are peaceful and can be kept with other small, peaceful community fish. They are compatible with other small tetras, rasboras, livebearers, and non-aggressive species such as dwarf gouramis, small catfish, and peaceful bottom-dwelling fish. Avoid keeping them with larger or aggressive fish that may intimidate or nip at their fins.

Behavior: Gold Tetras, also known as Hemigrammus rodwayi, are small and vibrant fish that add a splash of golden color to the aquarium. They have a sleek, elongated body with iridescent golden scales that shimmer under the light. Gold Tetras are peaceful and active swimmers, often found in the middle and upper regions of the aquarium. They exhibit schooling behavior, forming tight groups and displaying synchronized movements, which adds a captivating spectacle to the tank. Being social creatures, they thrive when kept in groups, and a larger group will promote their natural behavior and reduce stress. Gold Tetras appreciate a well-planted aquarium with open swimming areas. Providing floating plants or a dark substrate will enhance their coloration and create a more natural environment for them to explore.

Fun Fact: Gold Tetras are native to the waterways of Guyana and Suriname in South America. They are a relatively new addition to the aquarium hobby but have quickly gained popularity due to their attractive appearance and peaceful nature. Gold Tetras are known for their unique ability to change their body coloration based on their mood or breeding status. They can display more intense and vibrant golden hues during courtship or when excited. These color changes are a fascinating adaptation that allows them to communicate with one another and display their vitality. Watching a school of Gold Tetras swimming gracefully in unison, flashing their golden colors, is a sight that brings joy and beauty to any aquarium.

Perhaps the best store on island to get freshwater fish. They have a huge variety, including higher end freshwater fish (discus, puffers, flowerhorns , oddballs, ect) I’ve stocked a few tanks with their fish. They quarantine well and keep it real on how their fish are doing in shop.

Had a great experience here. I was looking for a unicorn/alicorn betta and spoke with the owner, Josh, about it. I ended up using his fish importing services to import a fish from Jakarta, and he brought in a few more white opaque or unicorn type half moon bettas too, to add to the variety in store. I got a sneak peak of the store while it was shut down for one week for a proper quarantine of its new fish. The owner knows his fish and keeps them healthy. A very different experience from a Petco or PetSmart! A Petco employee even recommended I go here for more unique betta fish. Note that they carry other types of fish too, plus Aquatic plants and some aquarium equipment. Pictured are some of the giant bettas, the alicorn betta, and i believe a beautiful ram.

Wonderful shop with lots of variety. Has the most unique selection of fish on the island, and at a reasonable price! Staff is friendly and very helpful when we have questions or concerns. Love coming here and seeing the jokes around the store. Also, Vinnie!

The owner, Josh, is not just knowledgeable about the fish, but also plants and tank issues. I am new to fish tanks and he has been extremely helpful in answering my questions and offering suggestions to make my experience easier. Parking is a bit tricky, but certainly worth it.

They have rare plants you can't find at most places. Got lucky we got a few; my husband is happy. This is one of his favorite places. They get pretty busy, so be patient. The staff are very helpful.
